We know that stepping onto a stage for an audition can sometimes feel like a big challenge! If you’re nervous about joining us for 9 to 5, here’s what you can expect!
WARM WELCOME
When you arrive, you'll head to the registration table and meet our producer Greg Maddock & stage manager Allison Gosnell. They will help you sign in and direct you to the correct audition space. Before auditions start, you’ll get a chance to breathe and meet some of the other friendly faces in our theater community (NAC Board Members, fellow actors, etc.)
HOW TO SIGN UP FOR AUDITIONS
Fill out the audition form online to pick an audition date, share your bio, list your conflict dates, and then let us take it from there to make this process as seamless as possible!
ENSEMBLE VOCAL AUDITION
For those auditioning for Ensemble only, your vocal auditions will be first. Remember: everyone in the room at this point is in this together! Our fantastic vocal director Cara Strausser will run-through the vocal cut of "9 to 5" with the entire group and give you ample time to practice and get comfortable with the music. Then it’s time to audition! Depending on the size of our group, we will split you up into groups of 5 - 8 and have you “perform” the song. In your group you will sing “9 to 5” together as the artistic team watches you rock it on-stage!
HOW TO PREPARE FOR VOCALS
The entire vocal cut and track of 9 to 5 is on our website, so we recommend you listen and practice it a few times before you come in. We will provide paper copies of the song for you there! Also, be sure to drink water throughout the day so your voice is nice and hydrated!
DANCE AUDITION
Those auditioning for ensemble and principal roles will be together in the audition room for the dance audition. Our choreographer Jaime Akerley will invite everyone on-stage to begin learning the dance cut. She will guide and teach the dance to everyone at the same time, so remember that you are all in this together! After going through the dance, she will give the entire group a chance to practice before it is time to perform. Jaime will then split everyone into small groups. Those groups will then take turns performing, with each group getting two chances to show their moves! Please bring dance shoes or sneakers. For safety reasons, flip-flops, Crocs, bare feet, and similar footwear are not permitted.
HOW TO PREPARE
Before the dance audition begins, we recommend you stretch to get your body ready to move. During the audition, try your best to follow along; remember that it may move quickly and you may make mistakes or forget, and that’s okay! We want to see how you learn, so all you can do is your best! During your “performance”, please remember that acting is your best friend. We want to see how you act in character during your dance-cut. So act your face off, dance your best, and have fun!
PRINCIPAL VOCAL AUDITION
For those auditioning for a principal/featured ensemble role, you will sing after dance auditions! For your vocal audition, we will be going through each song one by one. When it’s time for your song, we will run through it as a group to practice and get comfortable with the soundtrack. Then you will be asked to go to a separate room to sing your cut solo in front of the artistic team. After your entire group has finished singing, you will be dismissed for the night!
HOW TO PREPARE
The vocal cuts and tracks of all the songs are on our website so we recommend you listen and practice the song you chose a few times before you come in. When choosing a song, pick whichever one speaks to you! While some songs are for specific roles you still may be asked to come back for a different one, so don’t overthink it! We will provide paper copies of the song for you there!
POST AUDITION
The "waiting game" begins, but the process behind the scenes is just getting started. You might be invited to a "callback," which is a second look at specific actors for certain roles but remember not to jump to conclusions. Please make sure to check your email for a callback list; they will be sent out after auditions have concluded on Wednesday the 26th! While there is no specific time, the cast list will be posted after callback; expect to hear something before Sunday, August 30th!
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART
The goal of this production is to build a space for reflection and kindness. Our audition room is a supportive, no-judgment zone. We want you to succeed! If you have questions, ask them! If you need help, we’ve got you!
